The Urban Experience

Located in downtown Boise, the Idaho Urban Research and Design Center (IURDC) offers Master of Architecture and Landscape Architecture students the opportunity to engage in sustainable urban design in a metropolitan setting and to contribute to the future urban landscape of the rapidly evolving Boise Valley.

Students can choose to spend their fifth and/or sixth years of the professional program residing in Boise and studying at the IURDC.

Integrated design experience in an urban setting.
Collaborative projects allow students to build important interdisciplinary experience and to gain exposure to all urban project stakeholders, including design professionals, developers, builders, engineers, governmental officials, city planners, local and state governmental officials, business owners and community members. Students may also collaborate with construction management students from Boise State University.

Excellent paid and project-based internships.
Ample internship opportunities are available with architecture firms, city planning agencies, developers, community organizations, nonprofit agencies and governmental offices.

Outstanding professional networking.
Students interact frequently with local practitioners, who provide valuable critique and mentorship. Students are also actively involved in professional conferences and organizations, such as the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the Urban Land Institute and the U.S. Green Building Council.

Quality academics.
Architecture and landscape architecture courses at the IURDC are taught by faculty members who are seasoned design professionals with extensive urban experience in large metropolitan areas throughout the nation. Elective courses are available at Boise State University. Students also have access to full library services.

Firsthand learning about sustainable materials and technologies.
Students take annual tours of buildings certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) during construction and after completion to learn directly from designers, builders and owners about sustainable design and building practices.

Access to the Boise Valley’s diverse attractions.
The Boise Valley’s surrounding mountains, rivers and lakes offer many outdoor recreation opportunities, including skiing, biking, hiking, camping and more. There’s also a bustling downtown corridor and vibrant arts and culture scene.
