In educational circles, we hear a lot about STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and math), yet many of us think there’s an important letter missing—“A” for the Arts. Why not expand STEM into STEAM?
Focusing solely on STEM, ignores the inherent connections between the arts and sciences and risks losing sight of the kind of society we want to leave to future generations. Art allows us to:
- Connect with our dreams
- Gain insight to shared experiences
- Appreciate global culture and history
Education in the arts leads to more flexible approaches in problem solving, a greater willingness to take risks, and the ability to express human feelings and spirit.
This year’s theme is rich with visual implications and can be interpreted literally, metaphorically or whimsically.
