What You Learn
The M.F.A. program at the University of Idaho is unique. Students define their own body of work based on their competency and interests. You will specialize in an area that best fits your interest and talents, with flexibility to enhance your artistic versatility and work across disciplines.

Applicants are considered based on their skills and potential rather than being typecast based on a specific media area. Students generate work that explores existing genres of art and design and cutting-edge concepts.

A major component of the self-directed, 60-credit degree program is a one-person exhibition of your professional work supported by a written thesis on the nature of the work.

M.F.A. students have access to a private studio space in the art and design program's Graduate Art Studios (GAS House) as space allows.

The graduate degree in studio art prepares you to become a professional artist or for a career in academia. Opportunities include:

  • Professional artist or designer
  • Instructor of art or design in higher education
  • Manager/administrator of museums and/or galleries
  • Art buyer or curator for corporations/collectors
  • Director of nonprofit art organizations
