  • Biography

Dr. Jeff Filler is a licensed and practicing professional engineer with expertise in wood structures engineering. He has considerable experience in design using reinforced concrete and is active in both the wood and concrete industries and code writing bodies. He has particular expertise in the use and design of structural glued-laminated timber (`Glulam’). Consulting experience with Glulam ranges from developing technical information for new products, to in-service product evaluation and inspection, to design using Glulam. He also serves as Chairman of the Technical Review Board for the American National Standard for Glued Laminated Timber. Dr. Filler recently traveled to Malaysia to help introduce Glulam to Architects, Building Officials, and University Faculty in the country, and supervised the design of the first custom Glulam residence there. His consulting work also includes editing/writing/reviewing technical materials including being the Facilitator for the Fifth and Sixth Edition revisions of the American Institute of Timber Construction Timber Construction Manual.

Dr. Filler serves as an Adjunct / Affiliate Faculty member in the School of Design and Construction at Washington State University and the Architecture Department at the University of Idaho. At those schools he teaches `Structures’ to Architecture and Construction Management students. His lectures and course materials include `engineered’ design as well as `prescriptive’ (non-engineered) design. In the University arenas he brings real-life examples from experience to the classroom. Some of the examples come in real time straight from his consulting desk. His course materials are building-code-based.

Dr. Filler has served as a consultant in the determination of flood and low-flow characteristics of small mountain watersheds. His experience includes Shoring and Demolition Engineering for several major University Building Projects. He has also served as an expert witness on cases ranging from construction quality to railroad embankment failure.
