Wendy McClure is a Professor of Architecture at the University of Idaho and practicing architect and community planner. She was the first woman architecture faculty member to be tenured and promoted. She was also the first woman to serve as chair of the Department of Architecture at the University of Idaho.
Since joining the university faculty in 1987, she has developed an integrated outreach, teaching and research program, which targets the revitalization needs of Northwest communities. Through the venue of design studio, Wendy has engaged design students in community revitalization projects for over 40 northwest communities. Some of her publications on the subject of downtown revitalization include The Rural Town: Designing for Growth and Sustainability and a chapter for Downtowns: Revitalizing the Centers of Small Urban Communities. She is co-editor and contributing author of The Built Environment: A Collaborative Inquiry into Design and Planning released by John Wiley and Sons in 2007 and is currently preparing a manuscript on town-making and sustainable transformations in the intermountain west.
Wendy is the recipient of the Idaho Historic Preservation Council’s “distinguished preservationist award for superlative achievement in preserving the state’s resources,” city and county orchid awards for preservation projects, a New Orleans Historic Landmarks Commission design award for “outstanding achievement in preservation“ and UI alumni awards for excellence in teaching.
