Dean's Message

Welcome to the College of Art and Architecture.

Here, you will find studio arts, design disciplines and the latest digital modeling capabilities – all in one college. We are proud to be one of the few colleges in the nation to offer such a complete integration of the design disciplines and visual arts, and we are committed to providing our students with the engaging interdisciplinary experiences and the breadth of knowledge they need to thrive professionally.

You see, when our alumni address challenges in their careers, they do so across disciplines. To best prepare our students to meet this industry expectation and to succeed in their professional careers, we recently implemented a progressive learning model called the “Bundles Curricula.”

This distinctive approach, expressed in the bundles diagram (.pdf), respects traditional disciplinary content while emphasizing the highly integrated nature of the art and design professions. So, instead of learning in departmental silos, our students receive a strong interdisciplinary education. Regardless of major, each student graduates with a complete toolkit – or bundle – of skills, knowledge and experiences common to all art and design disciplines.

Studio culture provides an important framework for our learning model. At the heart of art and design, time in the studio allows our students to learn and practice on design problems that address real-life challenges in Idaho’s communities, cities, open spaces and public lands. Students see firsthand how they can make a positive difference through art and design.

Studios also create opportunities for students to work alongside our nationally recognized faculty members and guest lecturers on groundbreaking research addressing challenges of global importance, including the significant effort to find regenerative, sustainable design solutions. Our college is a leader in university-wide sustainability initiatives, and we provide critical outreach throughout the state.

Explore our Web site and learn more about our leading education, research and outreach. You will discover why we are Idaho’s most prestigious college of fine art and design.
