by Phil Mixter, Ph.D.
School of Molecular Biosciences and Medical Education (WWAMI)
Washington State University
Dr. Phil Mixter completed his undergraduate training at Oregon State University, worked for a small biotechnology company, and completed doctorate training at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Vermont College of Medicine.
Dr. Mixter joined the faculty at Washington State University (WSU) in 1995, holding a shared appointment in the Department of Microbiology and the Basic Medical Sciences (WWAMI) Program. His research interest focused on the immune response to digestive bacterial pathogens and regulation of the immune responses preventing damage to host tissues. He has taught first year WWAMI medical students in Moscow-Pullman their medical immunology course for over 15 years.
Since 2003, Dr. Mixter has focused fully on instruction in the biosciences. In addition to his WWAMI medical class, he teaches several classes to pre-professional undergraduates in microbiology as well as graduate-level immunology courses in the doctoral program of the WSU’s School of Molecular Biosciences and WSU’s Doctor of Pharmacy Program. He is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology’s Committee on Undergraduate Education (ASM CUE) and was awarded the WSU School of Molecular Biosciences outstanding teaching award in 2006.
