Proof of Valid Health Insurance
The Idaho State Board of Education requires proof of valid health insurance as a condition of enrollment. This policy is mandatory for all Idaho public universities and colleges and applies to all degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students physically enrolled for classes or completing other required degree work within the state of Idaho.
International Student Requirements
The health insurance requirement applies to all international students enrolled at the Moscow campus or UI centers regardless of degree-seeking status or credit hours. International students are required to purchase SHIP for themselves and their accompanying dependents, or provide evidence of comparable health insurance coverage that meets or exceeds the University of Idaho requirements. International students must complete a separate waiver process through the International Programs Office.
Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP)
Using SHIP in Boise
- In-network medical benefits for covered services are available through First Choice Health (PPO).
- First Choice Health is a nationwide network with several hundred participating providers in multiple specialties within a 50 mile radius of Boise, Idaho. To find in-network providers visit First Choice Health.
- Full-time University of Idaho Boise students may access Boise State University Health Services located at 1529 Belmont Street. A summary of health services is available here. University of Idaho students are responsible for all fee-for-service charges, including office visits, specialty procedures, clinical lab services, pathology, prescriptions, etc. The student’s insurance plan will be billed directly for these charges, with the student responsible for any unpaid balance (co-pays, deductibles, non-covered service). If a student is covered by SHIP, claims are submitted to AmeriBen, the claims administrator, when a student presents their proof of insurance card. Claims for covered services are processed at the in-network level of benefits.
- In-network prescription drug benefits for covered medications are available through any Express Scripts pharmacy. Express Scripts is a nationwide prescription drug benefit manager. The co-payment amounts for covered medications are the same as those for medications available at the Student Health Pharmacy on the Moscow campus. Further information is available here.
