Strategic Focus

The University of Idaho, Boise is uniquely suited to provide graduate programs, research, and professional development opportunities in a metropolitan setting. The University of Idaho, Boise supports teaching, learning, research, and outreach in: organizational development and leadership; water, natural resources and the environment; community sustainability; and the professions of law, medicine, architecture, engineering and education. Through water research of international prominence, a commitment to environmental and social stewardship, and economic growth through efficient technologies, we advance a prosperous Idaho. The University of Idaho, Boise is the place where opportunity and mission converge.

Land grant institutions were established through grants of federal land so that the general population of the United States could have access to – on equal terms – higher education that would excel not only in the arts, letters, and sciences, but also in the agricultural and mechanic arts. Later in the 19th century, extension programs were added to the mission. Abraham Lincoln called land grant colleges a "people's university."

Water, Natural Resources and the Environment
Water related research is a preeminent strength of the University of Idaho. With expertise in engineering, natural resources and other environmental disciplines, the Boise location fosters an enticing collaborative relationship with state and federal agencies and private sector partners in southern Idaho and exudes a synergy not otherwise possible.

Through architecture, conservation social sciences, environmental science, medical education, extension programs and other university disciplines, problems are being solved and collaborative partnerships are being forged to apply solutions.

Beginning with service to schools and educational institutions and extending to agency and private sector organizations, instructional programs, applied research and service bring value to the community and the state.
