The Master of Arts in Teaching (Art) degree is a 30-credit degree designed for certified teachers who wish to strengthen their experience in studio art.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (Art) online degree program allows you to complete all degree requirements online. At the heart of this unique program is our commitment to provide you with personal and individualized advising from the time you make application to the program until graduation.

After application and acceptance to the online MAT program you will meet (online) with your MAT advisor to complete your Study Plan. Your Study Plan is the list of courses you will need to complete to receive your MAT degree. It is filed with the UI College of Graduate Studies and is essentially the official contract between you and the University of Idaho describing the requirements you must meet to complete the MAT degree.

The first required course in your Study Plan is Art 570: Internet Portfolio. In this course you will learn the essential skills for building and maintaining a Web-based portfolio through which you will share your written and studio work with UI Art & Design faculty members.

In addition to Art 570 you can begin taking online education and art courses. You can, with the approval of your MAT advisor, choose to take some of the required studio courses at an institution of higher learning near where you live or to attend special summer sessions at the University of Idaho (or other school). Up to 10 credits of 300 and 400 (upper division undergraduate) level courses in art studio areas, or 400 and 500 level education courses, can be transferred to meet the requirements of your Study Plan.

Admission to the M.A.T. degree requires:

1. an approved undergraduate degree, or its equivalent as determined by the Art Department faculty.
2. at least 20 credits of undergraduate art course work, Fewer than 20 credits in art courses at the undergraduate level is considered a deficiency. Applicants with these deficiencies who are admitted to the M.A.T. program may be required to include deficiency course work as part of their graduate program. Deficiency courses are required but do not count towards satisfying degree requirements.
3. and a minimum grade-point average of 2.80.
