extra credit 3: Building Enclosure
return to Extra Credit

Overview

The purpose of this exercise is to improve your understanding of building enclosure systems by carefully examining and documenting an example on campus. You may investigate one of the following:

UI Commons
Library
Living Learning Center

Requirements

Walk around the perimeter of the building on the exterior and interior (to the extent that it is available to the public and does not disturb the occupants) and look very carefully at the enclosure system. Be sure to observe materials, connections, door systems, window systems, flashing, joints, signs of weathering, etc. Based on your observations complete the steps outlined below:

  • Determine and describe the primary strategy(ies) for enclosing the building (relationship between structure and cladding)
  • Identify and describe the principal materials used to complete the enclosure system
  • Draw 3 different sectional details of strategies used to ensure that water does not penetrate to the interior of the building. Reference each detail to a schematic building section or photo

Format

The work shall be presented in an 8 1/2 " x 11" format
