PRS - Personal Response System - a.k.a. 'CLICKERS ' 

PRS "clickers" must be brought to each class session

PRS "clickers" will be used during every class. This is a tool that will be used to record and assess performance, so it is essential that each student has theirs - in working order and ready to go - at the beginning of each class.

All students must have their Interwrite PRS clicker at the second class period, Jan 15. Because each system is proprietary, no other brands will work for this class.

PRS competency

Students are expected to have mastered the use of the clicker by the third class period. It is particularly important to understand how to use the letter and number keys to respond to multiple choice questions and provide quantitative answers, as well as the T & F buttons. There will be a limited amount of time allowed to respond to questions, so it is important to develop proficiency with this tool.

Batteries

It is conceivable that problems with the PRS may occur during class. Each PRS has a battery-level indicator is illuminated each time the device is turned on. The batteries that came with your PRS (3-AAA) may last for the entire semester, but they could also fail unexpectedly. Be prepared with three back-up AAA batteries. A small philips-head screw must be removed in order to change batteries, so be aware that a screwdriver will also be required. Turn your clicker off when it is not in use, especially if it is being bounced around in your backpack.

Security

Each clicker has a unique code that cannot be changed. In addition, each student must program their clicker with their student ID number. Together, those sets of information will be used to track and record student performance on in-class exercises and exams. Each student is responsible for maintaining the security of their PRS clicker.

Lost, stolen or forgotten clickers

In the case that your clicker is lost or stolen, students are responsible for providing a replacement before the next class. In this case, the instructor must be notified so the new unit can be logged in and there is no loss of information. There are no replacements available during class for forgotten, lost or stolen clickers.

No make-up examinations will be given in the case of a lost, stolen or forgotten clicker. There is, however, an allowance made for dropping the lowest scores for in-class activities. (See Participation on the Grades page. )

Academic honesty

Using another persons clicker in their place is just like taking a quiz or an exam for another student and is a violation of the student code of conduct. The following uses are not allowed:

• sharing a clicker with a classmate.
• operating multiple clickers by one student at the same time.
• using another student's clicker.
• tampering with or taking any action that would circumvent the normal and intended operation of the clicker.

Violation of these rules, or any other misuse of the clicker that could be construed as cheating, could result in failure for an exam, in-class questions or quiz session or for the course. For more information, consult the Student Code of Conduct.
