55.40 - Social Security Benefits

A. General. Typically, UI employees, except those who are full-time students and those in the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS), are covered by the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA).
A-1. Social Security Card Required. Every employee is required to present his or her Social Security card at the time of initial appointment. Salaries or wages cannot be paid until this has been done.
A-2. FICA Benefits. Social Security benefits are paid to qualified retired employees, their dependents, or their survivors. The amount of the benefit is based on the employee’s average earnings during employment covered by FICA.
A-3. International Hires. International hires may not be eligible for social security benefits. Specific questions should be directed to Employment Services (208) 885-3892, or to the Social Security Administration.
