Remember Homecoming “I” Mums?
“I” Mum corsages, one of the University of Idaho's oldest Homecoming traditions, may soon wither and fade. Once, at Homecoming, a male student presented the cheerful chrysanthemum corsage to a special woman – perhaps his date for Homecoming festivities or his mother who was visiting as an alumna or guest.
The “I” Mum tradition began nearly 100 years ago. In 1921, a group of female students established an Idaho chapter of Mortar Board, a national honorary service and fellowship society. One of the ways Mortar Board members raised funds for their activities was by selling “I” Mum corsages at Homecoming.
Sale of the corsages peaked in the 1950s; in 1958 more than 1,000 were sold. But in the mid-1970s, when Mortar Board became inactive, so did the “I” Mum tradition.
Today, Scott’s House of Flowers still offers the Homecoming tradition. The Moscow shop supplied Mortar Board with flowers for decades and recently updated the style of the corsages with a black ribbon bearing the phrase, “Idaho Vandals.”
Purchase your "I" Mum corsage to be worn during the parade and at the game. Corsages are $10. Pre-order 3-4 days ahead with Scott's House of Flowers by calling (208) 882-2547.
