Along with a slew of other Vandals, the University of Idaho Alumni Association will return to campus Sept. 22-29 to join the 104th year of Homecoming celebrations.
Join me and other alumni for a fun-filled week of Vandal Pride Planetwide. Whether it’s listening to the Vandal Marching Band at the bonfire rally, attending the traditional parade down Main Street or proudly singing the Vandal Fight Song at Saturday’s football game, there are many ways to show your Vandal Pride and reconnect with your alma mater.
In addition to all the Homecoming excitement, there are many reasons to be a proud Vandal. Our university had an 18 percent increase in externally sponsored research awards this year. The McCall Outdoor Science School is the 2013 W.K. Kellogg Foundation Western region winner for its success in promoting student engagement and community discovery, and our College of Law recently announced a nearly 12 percent increase in first-year applications.
Our campus has a vibrant history and, as these accomplishments show, a bright future. See you next week!

Vandal Traditions: University of Idaho Homecoming
First celebrated in 1909, Homecoming is one of the university's most iron-clad traditions. For years, the bonfire rally was said to be one of the most exciting events of the year.
Historically, the Homecoming game was played against Washington State. As the 1927 Gem of the Mountains describes, "The halls and classrooms became scenes of pep rallies and song-fests, and with the arrival in ever-increasing numbers of old grads and visitors, the old spirit was fanned to a white heat. The class reunions, together with the Pajama Serpentine and the big rally at the giant Frosh bonfire, held the fever at a high pitch until game time."

Do You Remember the "I" Mum?
Established in 1921, the "I" Mum tradition was once a customary gesture among male students. These cheerful chrysanthemum corsages were presented to a special someone – perhaps Homecoming date or visiting mother or guest.
Purchase your "I" Mum corsage to be worn during the parade and at the game. Corsages are $10. Pre-order 3-4 days ahead with Scott's House of Flowers by calling (208) 882-2547.
