This week is Moscow commencement, and the University of Idaho Alumni Association is celebrating the 2013 graduates. Welcome to the alumni community!

UIAA was founded in 1898 to support Idaho alumni worldwide and connect them with their alma mater. Amid the celebrations, the UIAA Board of Directors will convene in Moscow to honor outgoing members and induct new officers.

Portland's Michael Higgins ’98 will retire after seven years of service. New members will be Spokane's Tammy Everts ’91, Seattle's Jamie Wagner ’94 and Lewiston's Galen R. Baylor ’84. To cap it off, we will recognize incoming president Annie Averitt ’00, who is serving on the U-Idaho presidential search committee.

Our Hall of Fame inductees, Matt Espe '80 and John A. Rosholt ’59 ’64 will be recognized at special events throughout this week's commencement activities.

The Hall of Fame is a 50-year tradition, part of the extensive UIAA Awards Program that recognizes alumni for their achievements in volunteerism, success and commitment to the university. Nominations are now being accepted prior to Aug. 1.

118 Years of Commencement

The first Commencement ceremony was held in Moscow June 7-11, 1896. According to the 1903 Gem of the Mountains, the first-published University of Idaho yearbook, four people were inducted into the Alumni Association that year.

Four Generations of Silver and Gold

After nine summers in the field, Nels Solberg can call himself an expert – an expert in hard work.

The 2013 University of Idaho College of Business and Economics graduate said at the age of 16, when he first got the job bagging grain for Columbia Grain, Inc., in Grangeville, Idaho, he had no idea what he wanted in a career. But the hundreds of hours spent lugging the day’s harvest wasn’t about career guidance – at first.

Nels is the most recent graduate in a long line of business-savvy family members. The four generations share the same alma mater, and they even share the same name.

A Future Based on a Golden Foundation

As other children were dreaming of becoming astronauts, Spokane's Kevin Witkoe was dreaming of building the rockets to send those astronauts into space. Science is a passion he's continued with, and he is using his recently awarded Goldwater Scholarship to help develop it.
