It’s happened! The University of Idaho has been thrust out of its summertime routine and is now vibrant and alive with swarms of new faces and a renewed sense of Vandal Pride. Yes, alumni and friends, the 2013-2014 school year has begun!
Classes may have started today, but many campus events started over the weekend. Convocation 2013 was held last Friday morning, featuring Rayce Bird ’11, a virtual technology graduate whose elaborate special effects make-up artistry won an international SyFy TV competition. Sports fans also kicked off the Vandal football season with a special Vandal Spirit Friday at the Eastside Marketplace in Moscow. Coaches, players and cheerleaders pumped up the crowd, and the Vandal Marching Band provided entertainment.
First-year students spent their first Saturday on campus helping the Moscow community during the annual Serving Your New Community event. Service projects included tree planting, watershed restoration, park care, and more. Events culminated Sunday with the traditional Vandal Walk. About 1,000 first-year students made the trek from the Kibbie Dome to the Administration Lawn. Led by the sounds of the Vandal Marching Band, new students traveled a reverse path from the one they will take on graduation day.
It’s clear we’re headed full-speed into another great year at the University of Idaho! We hope to see you on campus, or at an alumni event in the future.

Campus Traditions: Vandal Walk
At the beginning of each school year, the Student Alumni Relations Board (SArb) welcomes first-year students to campus with the traditional Vandal Walk. Started in 1969, SArb created the event to introduce new students to campus, its traditions and meanings. The event was originally called New Student Tradition Night before receiving a name change in the 90s.

Preserving Idaho's History
Mary Anne Davis ' 87 knows Idaho. From ancient fishing grounds on the North Fork of the Clearwater River and 19th century Basque settlements in Boise to a Hatwai Indian village near Lewiston, Davis has been to tiny towns, mining camps, settled cities and wilderness areas so remote even global positioning systems get confused. But, as the associate state archaeologist in the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office, it’s all in a day’s work – and she loves it.
Since graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987 with a Master of Arts in anthropology, Davis has built a successful career by not only knowing these unique places, but by understanding their historic importance and ensuring their preservation.
