Matt Shelley ’75

Matt Shelley receiving Silver and Gold Award.Matt Shelley (left) and President Chuck Staben.
A career journalist, editor and television producer, Matt Shelley ’75 has worked in some of the most challenging and dangerous places in the world including Pakistan, Yemen, Beirut, Kosovo and Serbia, and managed media development projects designed to establish independent media and protect journalists.

In Pakistan, Shelley managed a USAID-funded media development project to support professional press clubs, improve journalism education at area universities and help radio stations respond to humanitarian crises.

Despite political tension between Pakistan and the United States, the development project forged strong professional relationships with Pakistani journalists and universities.

A station manager at the university radio station, KUOI, Shelley graduated in 1975. He worked locally as news director for KRPL before moving to KHQ-TV in Spokane, Wash., and KGW-TV in Portland. He later worked as a field producer for NBC News and produced documentaries for the Arts and Entertainment Channel (A&E) and History Channel. For the last two decades, he’s managed U.S. government funded international development projects, trained journalists overseas and worked as an independent television news consultant. He currently lives in Tbilisi, Georgia, where he is country director for the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) and manages a four-year, $13 million media development project funded by USAID.

He often returns to the Moscow campus for classroom discussions and serves as a member of the UI School of Journalism and Mass Media Advisory Board.

Shelley was honored with the Silver and Gold award April 17 in Moscow.
