Matthew Espe ’80
The University of Idaho Alumni Association today announced its 2013 Alumni Hall of Fame inductees who will be recognized at the May 9-11 spring commencement in Moscow.
Matthew J. “Matt” Espe ’80 of Newtown Square, Penn., who earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing in the College of Business and Economics, was appointed CEO in 2010 of Armstrong World Industries, Inc., in Lancaster, Penn. He oversees $2.6 billion in revenues and 8,500 employees worldwide. He has logged 30 years of experience in sales, marketing, distribution and management in global manufacturing businesses.
Before joining Armstrong nearly three years ago, he served as chairman and CEO of Ricoh Americas Corp., a subsidiary of Ricoh Co., Ltd. Prior to that, Espe was chairman and CEO of IKON Office Solutions, Inc., a $4 billion office equipment distributor and services provider with 24,000 employees. Ricoh acquired the company in 2008.
Previous to that, Espe was president and CEO of GE Lighting. In a career that spanned 22 years there, he managed multiple functional areas, including sales, marketing, distribution and manufacturing, as well as management within several business units. His global perspective is the result of having run businesses in Europe, Asia and North America.
At home, he is a respected and active volunteer and member of the board of United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He helmed the charitable organization’s 2007 campaign, which raised $50 million for the region’s non-profit organizations.
Additionally, he is a member of the board of Unisys Corp. He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing in the University of Idaho’s College of Business and Economics and a Master of Business Administration from Whittier College. He is married to Lori (Limbaugh) Espe, also an alumna of the college. They have four children.
