Joy Irving '64
The Jim Lyle Award is awarded for long-term dedication and service to the University of Idaho and Alumni Association.
Joy Irving graduated from the University of Idaho in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics.
Irving started the Dwight and Melva Hoffman Engineering Excellence Endowment, in honor of an endowed chair in the U-Idaho College of Engineering. Irving regularly contributes to this endowment and also has made significant gifts to the Niccolls Building Renovation project and the George Irving Chemical Engineering Scholarship Fund, in her husband’s honor.
She has been a member of the Leila Old Historic Costume Collection Board of Directors since 2008. The extensive educational collection, with pieces dating back to the Civil War, is owned by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. It requires constant care, and Irving spends many hours a week cataloging and preserving it.
“(Irving) is the epitome of a ‘glass half-full’ person and sees and acts upon myriad opportunities to enrich the lives of others,” said Edward McBride, a gift planning specialist at the U-Idaho Office of Estate, Trust and Gift Planning. McBride was one of the many supporters for Irving’s nomination.
Irving has put more than 2,000 volunteer hours into the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences. She also serves annually as a judge in U-Idaho food and nutrition classes.
Irving also is an avid Vandal football fan and enjoys square dancing.
