Preserving History

Thanks to Kenton Bird, Director of UI’s School of Journalism and Mass Media, giving a heads up to Maureen Taylor Regan on the UIRA Board, a historical plaque listing all the 1979 charter members, officers, and board members of the University of Idaho Retirees Association has been found and relocated to a new home in the Office of Alumni Relations.  Every word and name in this beautiful document was done in hand calligraphy by then Director of UI Design and Publications Leo Ames. For many years this plaque hung on a corner wall in the Faculty Office Lounge of Brink Hall.  Last summer when an extensive renovation project was planned for the building, Kenton Bird was concerned this piece of UI history might be lost in the construction transition. The plaque will be on display at the November 14 UIRA annual meeting at the University Inn-Best Western.  Some of you may see your name on there or you will recognize many of the names listed.  Be sure to check it out!

Many of you are also familiar with Brink Hall, a.k.a. the Faculty Office Building.    A major renovation of the building started last summer with completion slated for October 23.  Much of the interior design work was done by May 2013 UI graduate Debra Saul under the supervision of Shauna Corry, professor of interior design.   The design elements underscore the collegiate gothic architecture of this 1936 building, yet provide new soft furnishings and smaller tables to accommodate various configurations for conversation areas.  The new furniture is featured in the lounge and will serve the area well for brown bag lunches, elegant events with honored guests, and weekly faculty meetings.  Remediation of delayed maintenance issues such as water penetration from the exterior, crumbling tile, a 1970's era infill wall, and providing acoustical privacy for the UI Omsbud office have been addressed as well in this project.
