Registering for Classes
Welcome to the University of Idaho! As a student at the University of Idaho you have some responsibilities in the advising process. This page will help guide you through getting advised and registered for classes on VandalWeb. Students planning to attend Vandal Friday should be sure to do the first four steps before coming to campus.
Step 1: Check your major!
Remember how that application you filled out asked about your interests? Those were translated into some kind of major(s) here at UI. If your interests have changed, you need to update that by changing your major. You can do that by contacting
Undergraduate Admissions before the first day of classes. (Be sure to include your Student ID# or birthdate to be sure they can find you in the system) Note: If you are planning to attend VANDAL FRIDAY you should contact Admissions at least one week before the event!
Step 2: Check the Recommended Classes for your major.
Go to your chosen major on the list of curriculum guides. Look at the classes listed for freshmen. You will need to check out your ACT/SAT/Compass scores in
Vandalweb to decide which Math and English courses you are eligible to take. Remember, English is required every semester until you successfully complete English 102! Be sure to discuss your classes with an advisor before registering. Freshman registration can be confusing and your advisor is here ensure your academic success!
Step 3: Choose a Core Discovery Class.
Incoming freshmen are required to take a
Core Discovery Class both semesters of their freshman year. These are interdisciplinary social science and humanities courses centered around a number of interesting themes. (Note: If you have advanced placement or transfer credit, be sure to bring this to your advisor's attention as it may change your core requirements.)
Step 4: (No login required for this step) Check the Class Schedule for available days and times for your recommended classes.
A blank week's schedule will help you keep track of the days and times for your chosen sections. (BE SURE to check the enrollment availability for your sections--the class schedule updates every couple of hours!) The far-right columns of the class schedule include the number of seats in each section, number currently enrolled, and number of available seats. If the class is full but there is a waitlist available, the schedule will show how many students are waitlisted. The Registrar's Office website offers more information about how waitlists work.
As you find the sections you're interested in, write down the CRNs for those sections [The CRN (course reference number) is a unique 5-digit number for each class/section and is found in the far-left column].
(Coming to Vandal Friday? STOP HERE)
Step 5: Meet with your advisor.
You will not be able to register until your advisor's block has been removed.
All undergraduate students are required to meet with an advisor every semester before registering for classes to discuss class choices, degree progress, and career goals. If you are not planning to be on campus any time soon, a phone appointment can usually be arranged.
Advisors are assigned based on your chosen major. Our website includes a list of advising contacts for each department. The contact person can help you arrange an appointment with the best advisor for you. If you have any trouble reaching your department or a listed advisor, please contact the Academic Advising Center at (208)885-9831.
During the appointment, your advisor will discuss with you the classes you've looked at and answer any other questions that you may have.
Step 6: You are now ready to register.
You may need to Log in to
VandalWeb again if you logged out after checking your recommended classes. Note: Registration is available during specific dates based on class standing. If you have any trouble following these directions, your registration window may not currently be open--contact your advisor, the
Registrar's Office, or the Academic Advising Center for more help.
After you are logged in, click "Student Information/Registration Menu", "Registration Menu", "Add/Drop Classes", and select the correct term (if you don't see the term you are looking for--try scrolling UP). Once you reach the Add/Drop Classes page you will see the registration menu with ten slots to input the CRN numbers. Type in the CRN numbers for the sections you have chosen and click submit. (You may encounter a page that requests insurance information. You may skip this request and continue on to the Add/Drop page, but you MUST provide the insurance information requested as soon as possible. Students must have health insurance and will be required to purchase the University policy if we have no proof of other insurance on file!)
The screen will refresh, scroll down to look at the entire screen. The system will display your registered classes. If a class has already met its enrollment limit, you will be given an option to add yourself to the Wait List. NOTE: You must click Submit again to be added to a wait list. The system will NOT automatically add you to a Wait List.
Step 7: Double-check your schedule for time conflicts.
At the bottom of the Add/Drop Classes screen is a link to "Schedule by Day & Time". If any classes conflict, there will be a note below the weekly schedule and you will need to change your registration accordingly.
Be sure to check this schedule the day before classes start--changes can happen in the days and weeks before the semester begins!
