Advising Changes for 2012

Additional Course Sections

In response to scheduling demand, many key departments have opened up additional course sections and have been very proactive in communicating with students on course waitlists. Please see the list of updates below and use this information to assist students with whom you’ve worked over the course of this summer, as well as any students who contact you prior to the beginning of the fall 2012 semester.  If you have important updates from your college or department, please send them to advising@uidaho.edu.

English 101
  • All sections of English 101 are currently closed; however, the English department is committed to providing a seat for every student who placed into this course.  Dr. Gary Williams, department head in English, sent an email message to all students on the English 101 waitlist reassuring them of their course seat and providing them important information about navigating the waitlist as fall semester approaches. 
  • Students currently waitlisted for English 101 should be advised to attend class during the first week regardless of their waitlisted status.
Communications 101
  • The department of Psychology and Communication Studies has opened two new sections of COMM 101 to accommodate waitlisted (and new) students.  The department sent an email earlier this week to all waitlisted students encouraging them to enroll in a new section and remove themselves from waitlists.  Please see the section details below:

College of Science
  • Additional sections of BIOL 102L, BIOL 116 and MMBB 382 are being created.  Please see the class schedule for details. 
  • At this point, most waitlists in science courses are pretty manageable, and we can expect that most students will be able to access a seat. 
  • Additional sections of other courses are being considered, so please consult the advising website for more information.
Communication with incoming students
  • The advising office is planning to send a message to all incoming first-year students registered for less than 12 credits with instructions on managing the waitlist, navigating the add and drop procedures, and addressing the importance of full-time status.

Refund Policy, Late Payment Fees, and Payment Plan Changes

Summary of changes:

  • Tuition and Fee Refund Policy – 100% for first 2 weeks of class, 0% after end of 2 weeks.  There are no more 90%, 50% or 25% refund dates.
  • Late payment fees – 1st late fee changed from $50 to $75. 2nd late fee changed from $50 to $100.  Added additional late fees of $100 per month when balance is not paid in full. 
  • Payment Plans – We are going to in-house payment plans and will not be using TMS.  However, the in-house plan is very similar to the plan TMS offered.  Please refer students to the following website for more information: http://www.uidaho.edu/controller/studentaccounts/paymentplans. Students will be able to sign up through VandalWeb as soon as the plans are available.

Critical Changes in Advising 2012-2013


There are major changes starting this summer that will affect student course registration, drop deadlines, cooperative course enrollment, and degree planning. These changes will significantly impact how students are advised at the University of Idaho. Topics include: changes to Regulation C (add/drop deadlines) affecting all students, new procedure for cooperative (UI/WSU) course registration, appropriate math placement, adjusting course load for degrees changing to 120 credits, and important updates from around campus.

2012-2013 Core Curriculum Guide

The University of Idaho faculty is currently considering some changes to the General Core Studies section of the 2012-2013 general core curriculum. The proposed changes have not been included on this core checklist; however, an updated version will be made available once the faculty has taken action on the proposed items. None of the changes under consideration would require a student to alter their first semester schedule.

Tips for Moving Students to the 2012 Catalog

Catalog Change Tips

This document is an example of how to complete the Change of Curriculum form in order to move students to the 2012-2013 catalog. As you will see, you need only complete the top section of the Change of Curriculum form, and the student does not need to sign the form as long as the department approves the action. Departments that will have to process a high number of these forms can simply make a copy of the form signed by the department head, then fill them out during pre-registration advising. Caution: advisors and students should make sure all 2012-2013 degree requirements are completed before they move a student to the new core. Advisors are encouraged to use the What If function on Degree Audit to verify all requirements are met.
