Advantages of Joining
Every honor society is different and there is no one reason to join, but here are a few reasons why you might want to consider joining a reputable honor society.
1. To Reach Higher.
Honor society membership is not offered to everyone and does not come easily. If you receive an invitation to join, it is not something to take lightly. Rather it is an honor that reflects your achievements—in academia, leadership, service or otherwise. Honor societies are not social clubs. They are not political organizations. They are not paths to instant success. The distinction is a chance for you to reach higher and take advantage of opportunities for scholarship and engagement associated with the society.
2. To Receive Recognition.
Joining an honor society won’t change your achievements. However, earning an honor society pin or key does show that what you accomplished is extraordinary, placing you at the top of a given field. An honor society listed on a resume provides a tangible recognition of your success.
3. To Enhance Your Education.
Many honor societies offer chances to receive publications, participate in special events and activities or attend regional or national conferences to their members. These opportunities enhance your education by keeping you current in your field and broadening your horizons. These services often extend into alumni programs, even after your college years end.
4. To Earn Additional Scholarships.
Honor societies often offer scholarship awards specifically for their members. By joining you may qualify for and receive this additional scholarship money. *Such scholarships often require separate applications.
5. To Advance Your Future Career.
Honor society membership opens doors. It provides networks of people who share common membership, often providing job opportunities and connections. In addition, many employers and graduate schools recognize the exceptional achievement associated with honor society membership and identify members more favorably in the application process.
No matter why you join, honor societies provide many different opportunities to members.
If you are unsure about joining a specific honor society, the University Honors Program (UHP) is happy to provide individual advising.
