Green to Gold

The Green to Gold program provides selected active duty enlisted members of the Army an opportunity to complete their baccalaureate degree requirements and obtain a commission through participation in the ROTC program. If you are currently on active duty, have completed two years of active duty before school starts, and are accepted by a college or university, then you can compete for an Active Duty Green to Gold scholarship. If you receive a scholarship, you will be allowed to voluntarily request discharge from active duty and enroll in Army ROTC to earn a baccalaureate degree and commission as a second lieutenant. In addition to the awarded scholarship, each winner receives a flat rate of $900 annually for books, supplies and equipment, as well as a tax free stipend

You must complete your baccalaureate degree before returning to active duty as a second lieutenant. The application window is December 1 through April 15th each year. The Green to Gold two-year non-scholarship option is available to soldiers who have completed two years of college and who can complete their college degree requirements in two years. Non-scholarship Green to Gold members can also participate in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) . If you have completed the required number of months on active duty to receive your GI Bill/Army College Fund benefits, then you may collect these benefits as well as the scholarship benefits. A two-year enlistment requires twenty months active duty and a three or more year enlistment requires thirty months active duty to receive your benefits.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible soldiers must:

  • have a GT score of 110 or higher
  • possess a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher
  • have a SAT score of at least 920 or an ACT composite score of at least 19
  • meet all other Army ROTC scholarship requirements

As a winner of a scholarship you're required to complete all ROTC classes with a GPA of 3.0 or above, pass the Army Physical Fitness Test prior to the end of the first semester of your first scholarship year, and maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or above. Upon graduation, you have an obligation to accept a commission and serve full-time in the Active Army for a total of eight years. This obligation may be fulfilled by serving three to four-years on active duty, followed by four to six years' service as citizen soldiers in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve or by serving eight years in the National Guard or Reserve preceded by a period necessary to complete the active component resident officer basic course.
