New Variety Nitrogen Rate Trial at Aberdeen, ID, 1997

Methods: All 3 varieties received 3 different fertilizer rates (30, 80, and 130 pounds of N/acre) with each rate being applied 100% preplant and 60:40 split (60% preplant : 40% start of jointing). One treatment of Idaho 377s received an extra 30 lb/A N @ heading (applied N=160 lb/A) to give higher protein content required for hard white. Another treatment of Idaho 377s received an extra 40 lb/A of P & K (noted by asterisk in table below) at the 80 lb/A (applied N) rate to confirm the adequacy of P & K. Note: Spring soil tests showed 120 lb/A N in the soil before planting, so applied rate + soil amount = total N (i.e. 80 lb/A applied + 120 lb/A soil = 200 lb/A total N). Ten consecutive plants from a middle row of each plot were analyzed at the end of tillering stage for tiller and leaf growth. The number of plants having a particular tiller and the total leaf count by tiller position for the 10 plants was recorded.

Results: Pomerelle and Whitebird utilized all available nitrogen and yields increased with each increment of N. Idaho 377s did not utilize all available nitrogen and yield was maximized at the 200 lb/A rate (total N) which matches the U of I recommended rate for a 130 bu/A yield goal (Irrigated Spring Wheat Production Guide for Southern Idaho, Bulletin No. 697- see related publications page). Tillering and leaf growth evaluations (Table 2) show that Idaho 377s tillered less than Pomerelle and Whitebird, which may account for the Idaho 377s lack of response to higher N rates. Note columns T1T1, T1T1L, and T3 that show a lack of T1T1 and T3 tillers for Idaho 377s compared to Pomerelle and Whitebird. See bottom of tillering and leaf growth ratings table for descriptions of the column headings.

Protein content and other quality evaluations are not yet complete and will be added at a later date.
