The first phase renovation is underway. This summer's $10 million project includes replacing the plywood end walls with translucent panels, building ground-level exits, and upgrading the infrastructure to meet life-safety requirements. The wall replacement is the first and most visible element of a multi-phase project to renovate the 35-year-old structure.
The Vandal football team is scheduled to have access to the dome by Aug. 24, with their first home game scheduled for Sept. 19 against San Diego State.
The second phase of the Kibbie Dome makeover includes the development of a clubroom, mini-suites and premium club seating.
The price tag for the second phase is $8 million and athletic director Rob Spear said the fundraising efforts are at about 50 percent.
About the Renovation
The Dome Renovation and Expansion Project Will:
- "Daylight" the Dome by replacing the east and west walls with translucent fiberglass panels - opening the dome to natural daylight to give it a larger, open and lighter feeling.
- Update fire suppression and smoke exhaust systems to current building code requirements.
- Add seats to increase capacity to accommodate 20,000 – greater capacity is projected to generate more revenue for university athletic programs.
- Improve sight lines and accommodate new seating - creating a more exciting and rewarding fan experience.
- Update concourses, restrooms, media facilities, and lighting - meeting current building codes, a higher standard of excellence.
- Add premium seating options to include club seats and 6 mini-suites – providing a luxurious experience for our most generous donors and alumni.
- Create a premium level Vandal Hospitality Club Room – a special venue for alumni gatherings and pre-game activities.
- Create an inviting and inspiring west-end approach to the Dome.
